Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, until the title of the new Big Bang Theory spin-off was revealed. After over a year of waiting, The Big Bang Theory fans finally know what the franchise’s newest spin-off will be about, and… it’s very unexpected. The new series was announced in April 2023, and is the first branching series from the flagship show, with the other spin-offs, Young Sheldon and George & Mandy’s First Marriage, being set in the past. The show puts TBBT’s supporting cast front and center, with an unexpected character leading the show.
Per Deadline, the new Big Bang Theory spin-off is officially titled Stuart Fails To Save the Universe. As a result, the show will follow Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman. Stuart was the owner of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard’s (Johnny Galecki) local comic book store, and the character was the butt of more jokes than any other in the series. Over the long-running show’s 12 seasons, we watched Stuart’s life descend further and further into chaos, as he exemplified the ’00s stereotype of the depressed and geeky comic book shop owner.
Not every character in ‘The Big Bang Theory’ was given the depth they deserve in the early seasons.
The galaxy-sized update didn’t reveal any other plot or casting details. Fans already know that Stuart will be joined in the new show by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and, most recently announced, everyone’s least favorite physicist, Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Interestingly, the report revealed that the spin-off hasn’t officially been greenlit yet. However, given the franchise’s immense popularity, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe likely won’t be left in a state of limbo like Schrödinger’s cat for very long.
The title reveal is as unexpected as it is exciting. Fans of The Big Bang Theory are always desperate to spend more time with their favorite characters — as is evident by the show still being the most binged series on streaming. But, Stuart is potentially the last character fans thought would get their own show. Stuart is a likeable guy, as viewers sympathize and are able to cathartically laugh at his life falling apart, while cheering for the few wins he does get across the 12 seasons. However, it is questionable whether he has the kind of on-screen power to lead a series in the same way Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) did.
Given the show’s title, expect Stuart’s life to have hit another major bump in the road. When we left him in The Big Bang Theory’s finale, his revamped comic book shop was still surviving, and he’d finally landed a girlfriend (the aforementioned Denise). The title poses a lot of questions about the stability of Stuart’s newfound happiness. Did he and Denise actually work out? Will we see the end of their relationship in the new show? Or, does Stuart have another, even bigger hurdle in front of him that he will fail to overcome? Expect more details to be revealed when the series is officially picked up for production.
