Beyoncé does not trap songwriters in an underground dwelling for them to make songs for her.
One singer-songwriter, Sia, who wrote Beyoncé’s 2013 song “Pretty Hurts,” acknowledged the allegation as ridiculous in a quick chat with Gotham Galleria.
During a New York City visit, Sia wore all black during a fit check with Gotham, where she detailed her outfit, including pieces from Prada and Negativo. Towards the end, Sia was asked about the “craziest” rumor she’s heard about herself.
“Um, that I was living in Beyoncé’s basement,” she answered.
Sia’s response shocked the BeyHive, as the rumor began after Sia gave a misinterpreted quote about Beyoncé’s songwriting sessions in 2015.
“The process is like a writing camp, essentially. She flies us all in and puts us all up,” Sia told Rolling Stone that year. “We all live in a house together — like five producers and five topline writers. She visits each room and will contribute and let us know what she’s feeling and what she’s not feeling.”
The quote was somehow twisted into being alleged to mean that Sia was being held against her will, which couldn’t be further from the truth. In 2020, Sia joined in on the joke, claiming that she lives “in Beyoncé’s basement” while responding to a fan.
In other Sia news, the artist filed for divorce from her second husband, Daniel Bernard, this week after 26 months of marriage. The couple welcomed a child, Somersault Wonder Bernard, last March, while Sia adopted two sons in 2019.
