A timely “STFU” was offered to the artist formerly known as Kanye West by Playboi Carti early Wednesday. The brief and somewhat uncharacteristically direct remark from the merciful MUSIC deliverer arrived amid a slew of perturbing X updates from Ye, who also tucked in an unfinished version of his Bully album during his latest social media sprint.
“YE STFU,” Carti wrote on X after Ye, who was credited as the executive producer of 2020’s MUSIC predecessor Whole Lotta Red. This came after Ye very publicly took issue with Carti’s reaction to Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS lyric-spurred “FINE SHIT” shoutout, ultimately bringing Carti’s own former romantic partner, Iggy Azalea, into the mix.
Within hours, Ye had again addressed Carti on X, at one point referring to him as “a way more basic, dumber version” of the late Virgil Abloh. He also again mentioned Carti’s IG interaction with Kim, which saw him telling the SKIMS co-founder to have North West, her and Ye’s oldest child, send him a song.
A frequent topic in Ye’s recent social media activity has been Diddy, who currently remains behind bars ahead of a trafficking and racketeering trial. Among the Diddy-focused remarks from the Bhad Bhabie-sampled “Carnival” artist were mentions of Cassie, who was seen in hotel surveillance footage circa 2016 being assaulted by Diddy, with whom she was then in a relationship. Wednesday, Cassie shared Carti’s “YE STFU” X update to her Instagram Stories.
Jim Jones, meanwhile, opted to show “love” for Ye despite also being disparagingly mentioned on social media by the 24-time Grammy winner in recent days. Prior to this switch-up, Ye was seen wearing a Dipset chain while spending time with Jones in Tokyo.
Numerous other artists have also been negatively referenced or directly called out by Ye in recent days, including Cardi B. Though Cardi didn’t mention Ye in the below X update, many fans have taken it as her way of responding, all while continuing to build hype for her long-teased Invasion of Privacy follow-up.
Mere months ago, it would have been safe to assume that Ye would have been a featured artist on Carti’s MUSIC. The two have an extensive history of collaborations together, with Carti undeniably standing as one of many directly-influenced-by-Ye artists currently popping wheelies on the zeitgeist. Given recent developments, however, Ye’s absence from the album’s roster of guest features shouldn’t exactly be a shock.
