Jason Isaacs has rescinded some of his previous comments about nudity in Hollywood and in the latest season of The White Lotus after claiming there is a “double standard” to the way actors and actresses are asked about nude scenes. Isaacs is part of the star-studded cast of The White Lotus’ third season, which also includes Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, and Aimee Lou Wood. In episode 4, Jason caused quite a shock when he revealed his Isaacs in a scene. Expectedly, the actor was asked about the moment a lot by journalists, and he recently apologized for how “poorly” he brushed off the questions.
During an interview with Variety, Isaacs reflected on his previous comments about the double standard towards male and female nudity in movies and on TV. “I said the wrong words in the wrong way,” the actor said. “I used the phrase ‘double standard,’ which I didn’t mean at all.” In a past interview, Isaacs questioned a journalist about whether they would ask actresses like Anora’s Mikey Madison and The Substance’s Margaret Qualley a similar question about a nude scene. “There is a [different] double standard — women have been monstrously exploited and men haven’t,” Isaacs continued.
The extremely popular HBO series has led to ironic and overwhelming tourism surges in its shooting locations.
It was clear that Isaacs was uncomfortable being asked about nudity in the interviews. “I had been asked so many times in the same day by journalists, ‘Are you wearing a prosthetic?’” he said. “Which means, ‘Have I seen your actual penis? It’s very important for me to know if I’ve seen your penis.’ It just strikes me as a bit weird and slightly obsessive. I thought I could have fun batting it off, but I batted it off very poorly.”
Much of the backlash surrounding Jason Isaacs’ initial comments surrounds the “double standard” he brought up and where he mentioned Mikey Madison and Margaret Qualley. “I absolutely should not have mentioned those two actresses, whom I respect enormously,” Isaacs continued. “Mikey Madison I’m a massive fan of. My point wasn’t that men have had a harder time than women — that would be absurd. Women have had a monstrous time on camera forever, and I hope to God that is changing.”
Along with his own discomfort at the nature of the questions, Isaacs said he also wanted to brush off the nudity questions because he didn’t want to divert attention away from the series or “take away from [creator] Mike White’s brilliance.”
In The White Lotus Season 3, Isaacs plays Timothy Ratliff, the patriarch of the extremely wealthy Ratliff family. Over the past five episodes, the layers have been peeled back on how Timothy made his millions, and the consequences are slowly catching up with him. There are three episodes left this season, meaning Timothy’s (and our own) stress levels will only continue to rise before the climactic finale in the eighth episode. New episodes of The White Lotus release weekly on Sunday on HBO and Max.
