First Alert: A strong winter storm moves through the Northland

TUESDAY: Today is a First Alert Weather Day for our ongoing winter storm. This morning, we have winter weather advisories in place across southern St. Louis County along with Carleton County and Douglas County for potential icing this morning. Highway 53 in southern St. Louis County has reported icy conditions, be very careful while driving this morning, especially when going over bridges and overpasses. Temperatures will hover in the mid 30s through the morning with a gradual changeover from rain/freezing rain to a mix of rain and snow to eventually all snow later this afternoon. Winds will pick up later today out of the NE at 10-20 MPH. Snow will last overnight with the heaviest of the snow in Northwest Wisconsin and the UP where winter storm warnings are in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

WEDNESDAY: Tomorrow morning snow will be heavy at times across Northwest Wisconsin and the UP, with lighter snow in Northeast Minnesota and just flurries or dry conditions expected further north in and west. Snow tapers off in Minnesota by mid-morning and slowly tapers off from west to east in Northwest Wisconsin and the UP as lake effect snow showers linger into Wednesday evening. Snow will total between 8-14″ from Ashland to Ironwood, with lower amounts of 2-4″ in and around Duluth, and even lower amounts further north and west. Highs will only reach the 20s with windy conditions expected throughout the day, with winds out of the NW at 15-25 MPH gusting up to 40 MPH.

THURSDAY: Thursday will be much calmer with mostly sunny skies to start with some clouds arriving during the afternoon. We’ll see highs in the 30s with winds out of the W at 10-15 MPH.
