Shooting at New York high-rise kills 5
USA shooting at a high-rise office building in midtown Manhattan has left at least 5 people dead, including the gunman.
Gunfire rang out at around 6pm on July 28 (5am today Hanoi time) after a man armed with a rifle stormed into the high-rise building on Park Avenue, which houses many offices and also attracts many tourists. Hundreds of police, several helicopters and a drone were deployed to the scene afterwards.
“Four people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed. The suspect also died after shooting himself,” a law enforcement source said.
Images released by US media showed a man wearing sunglasses and a dark jacket, carrying a rifle, entering the building.
According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance video shows the man entering the lobby of the building and immediately opening fire on a police officer and others. The suspect went to the elevator area and shot the security guard, then went up to the 33rd floor, shot another person before shooting himself in the chest.

The New York Police Department, assisted by the FBI, is investigating the motive for the shooting. The suspect has a history of mental illness.
A witness said the suspect moved from floor to floor in the building as office workers were getting ready to leave work.
Jessica Chen said she was watching a presentation with dozens of people on the second floor when she “heard multiple gunshots coming from the first floor.” They ran into the conference room and used tables to block the door. “We were so scared,” Chen said, adding that she texted her parents to tell them she loved them.
This is the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks gun violence. By the organization’s definition, a shooting is considered a mass shooting when there are at least four casualties, not including the attacker.
