COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Funeral arrangements have been announced for award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and Columbia native Angie Stone.
Stone’s funeral will take place on Saturday, March 15, at Columbia’s First Nazareth Baptist Church on Gervais Street, where she began singing gospel music at a young age.
Stone, 63, died last weekend following a car accident in Alabama. She and other crew members were leaving a performance in Mobile when their vehicle got involved in a crash with a commercial vehicle.

Members of Stone’s team confirmed with WIS’ Billie Jean Shaw that Stone was traveling to Atlanta to catch a flight to Baltimore, Maryland, to perform at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament that Saturday afternoon.
Stone leaves behind a powerful legacy in music. At 16 years old, she and her childhood friends formed the first female hip-hop trio called “The Sequence.” They were first female hip-hop trio signed to Sugar Hill Records label in the late 1970s and the early 1980s.
In an interview with Shaw, Roy Brasley, Stone’s stylist said Stone helped discover some of the biggest stars today. “There wouldn’t be a Mary J. Blige, or SWV or Alicia Keys or Jill Scott any of these people. Like Clive (Davis) and the rest of the labels would bring Angie into the studio to OK these artists before they signed them,” Brasley said.,
Brasley began working with Stone in 1999 at the height of her R& B singing career which included the release of her biggest hits, including, “No More Rain,” “Brotha,” and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”,
“She deserves so much respect and so much more; people just don’t understand what Angie did for this industry,” Brasley said.
Tributes are pouring in from celebrities paying respect to Stone including from Beyonce, Swizz Beats, Tyler Perry, Jamie Foxx and more.
Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
